Cold War Conflicts
Changes from the previous eras
- For the first time in U.S. history, the U.S. entered into a military alliance (NATO) with other nations during peacetime. The cold war ended only hope to return to U.S. isolationism.
- This was the closest that the U.S. had been to nuclear war.
- The world was divided into into 3 parties (1-Capitalist, 2-Communist, 3-poor) which were determined by economic wealth and stability. The U.S. focused on expanding its Sphere of Influence on 3rd world countries to prevent them from falling to communism.
Core AMerican values
Nationalism was present during the cold war because Americans and the government believed that Capitalism was superior to Communism. These political ideologies were a cause of the cold war. In order to prove that American ways were better we set up a policy of containment. It was to ensure that the spread Communism came to a halt by providing economic aid to countries of Communist rule or facing the threat of becoming Communist.
Progress resulted from the Korean War. The U.S. was able to help South Korea resist North Korea and Communist rule. South Korea gained some land north of the 38th parallel and became Democratic. The Berlin airlifts also allowed for American progress. It was an attempt to break the blockade. American and British officials would fly food and supplies into West Berlin. It boosted American prestige around the world. In May 1949, the Soviet Union realized that they were defeated and lifted the blockade.
Common good comes out of the Truman Doctrine and Marshall plan. The U.S. government provided economic aid to countries who are facing communist threat. This prevents the spread of communism and helps ensure Americans that they would not be threatened to resort to communist rule.
