The Gilded Age demonstrates major changes in the uprising of political machines (Boss Tweed & Tammany Hall) because of their thirst for power and wealth leading to the creation of unions (AFL) since these political machines and big businesses were taking advantage of their workers.
SegregationSegregation is the separation of people on the basis of race.
Whites usually received the better things when it came to segregation while colored people usually had to deal with things that were in worse condition.
Booker T. Washington, an African-American Post Civil War leader, giving a speech at the Atlanta Compromise saying that African-Americans need to "Earn equality."
political machinePolitical machines are organized groups that control a political party in a city and offer services to voters and businesses in exchange for political and financial support.
Shown in this political cartoon is the concept of a political machine where the smaller guys point (vote) towards the bigger guy, who is in charge and runs the operation. It demonstrates how it is a chain effect and there are many people who are involved.
In the United States Senate, wealthy monopolists (in the back) are shown taking control the senate while the mayors (smaller people) work for these wealthy monopolists. The people's entrance to the senate is closed as well.
collective bargainingCollective bargaining is the negotiation between representatives of labor and management, to reach written agreements on wages, hours, and working conditions.
The American Federation of Labor used this strategy with their skilled workers to reach agreements between labor and management that benefited them both.

national Association of advancement for colored peopleThe NAACP is the National Association of Advancement for Colored People. It was founded in 1909 to promote full racial equality.
African-Americans would often rally in order to show their struggles and promote their strong belief for equality.
W.E.B. Du Bois, an African American Post Civil War leader, was the founder of the NAACP and held the belief that African-Americans deserved immediate equality.
j.d. rockefellerJohn D. Rockefeller was one of the biggest robber barons. He gained his wealth through the control of 95% of oil by 1877 by using horizontal integration. This allowed him to raise oil prices above original price levels. Rockefeller contributed over $500 million to charities.

In the background is a U.S. government building which is surrounded by barrels of oil and smoke stacks behind it, representing that oil is running the government by J.D. Rockefeller who owns Standard Oil Co. which makes up at 95% of the oil supply. In this cartoon Rockefeller is stuffing money to the people in the government buildings.
Horizontal Integration is a business strategy that Rockefeller used in his "success." He owned many oil companies which allowed his to charge higher prices for oil.

During the Gilded Age Nationalism is shown through the members of the NAACP; they are devoted to being apart of this nation, but the nation does not accept African-Americans with open arms like they should.
Work ethic is shown through the AFL by taking part of collective bargaining. The members of the AFL work very hard at what they do and partake in collective bargaining to make sure that they are being rightfully rewarded for all that they do. The concept of Social Darwinism was also applied during this time period that influences work ethic. It is the belief that the only way to be successful it to work your hardest and put forth all your effort into working.
Political machines would help others in need, such as immigrants, even though they were taking advantage of them to ensure that they had the most power possible. These groups would help the immigrants when they came to America with nothing by giving them something.
